As we approach the holiday season, Jefferson students will almost assuredly begin to exhibit the frenetic, anticipatory behavior that is expected for children of this age. A combination of time off from school, extended family coming to town, special foods, lights, music and gift giving make for an exhilarating experience for a middle schooler. However, there are a significant number of children who dread this time of year and actually become anxious because it just reaffirms the gulf between the haves and the have-nots.
For these students, time off from school can potentially mean not getting as much food as they normally get from their two meals at school. If parents are working hourly jobs there is often no such thing as paid leave. Additionally, kids are bombarded with images and see their peers receiving numerous gifts and treats that are completely out of their reality. Jefferson, perhaps more than any middle school, is home to a total mix of families from all economic backgrounds
If you are able, help us to leverage this to our advantage by contributing to our Holiday Giving Fund (link is below).
Alternatively, if you would be interested in adopting a family please email jeremy.siegel@apsva.us
Finally, donations of hats, gloves, socks, and toiletries can be brought to the main office during school hours (by you or your Jefferson student).
Here is a pay link to make a tax-deductible monetary donation: PAY LINK And remember, you can always go HERE to buy wreathes and Honey Baked Ham gift cards to support our cause.
Let’s band together to help make the upcoming season better for our students.
