Jefferson Middle School is quickly approaching its winter break. It seems like every year we put out an appeal for assistance that characterizes this period of time as one of economic struggle for a not-insignificant portion of our student body. Sadly, this year is no exception. In addition to the usual problems of high rents and high prices for daily essentials, some of our students’ families are also dealing with the added weight of being hesitant to go to work for fear of being separated from their children through heightened immigration enforcement efforts. In an effort to at least make a small impact on this situation, we are collecting money to purchase grocery gift cards to provide to our student’s families before we leave for winter break. While this isn’t a flashy or complicated endeavor, covering even half of a week’s grocery bill could really make a difference for a family that is living on the edge. We are always amazed and in awe of our local community’s generosity for our kids.
