Class Supplies & Recommended Instruments

Class Supplies

(All students will need BY THE 2ND WEEK OF SCHOOL)

All Band Students

  • Pencil (daily)
  • A metronome/tuner (for home and school use; a tuner/metronome app such as Tonal Energy is also acceptable)
  • A music stand (for home practice)

All Percussionists

  • Practice kit including 8 inch pad, bells and stand.  We recommend a rolling case, if possible.
    • All percussionists are required to have access to a Practice Kit at home for daily practice.
  • One Stick/Mallet bag(Vic Firth SBAG2 or Sabian 61143 is recommended)
  • Snare Drum Sticks, one pair(Vic Firth SD1 generals are strongly recommended)
  • Bell/Xylophone mallets, one pair (Malletech OR 39R or Mike Balter 10R are strongly recommended)
  • Timpani Mallets(2 pair)
    • Vic Firth American Custom Timpani T1-General, one pair
  • Marimba Mallets(two pair), the below models are strongly recommended
    • Innovative Percussion 240’s (two pairs) or Vic Firth M114 (2 pairs)

Recommended Instrument List

No student will be denied the opportunity to participate in the band program based on the quality or brand of their instrument. However, student success will be greatly improved if each student uses a good quality recommended instrument.

Flute

  • Recommended model: Yamaha 361H
  • Suggested Brands: Pearl, Yamaha, James, Muramatsu, Gemeinhardt (step-up models only–no student models).
  • Strongly recommended features: solid silver head joint, off-set G key, open hole (with plugs), low B key
  • Supplies
    • A wooden or plastic cleaning rod (no metal!)
    • A bandanna or handkerchief for cleaning

Oboe

Students may rent school-owned instruments or we recommend buying a quality, used professional instrument.

  • Recommended models – Fox Renard Model 330 Intermediate Oboe
  • Supplies
    • 3 medium strength reeds (reeds will wear out and need to be replaced periodically)
    • a silk swab
    • cork grease
    • small water cup for soaking reeds

Bassoon

Students may rent school-owned instruments or we recommend buying a quality, used professional instrument.

  • Recommended models – Fox Model IV, Renard Model 220 or 240
  • Supplies
    • 3 medium strength reeds (reeds will wear out and need to be replaced periodically)
    • a silk swab
    • cork grease
    • small water cup for soaking reeds

Clarinet

  • Recommended models – Buffett E-11 France, Buffet Crampon R13, Yamaha YCL 450 (intermediate) or 650 (entry level professional). We strongly recommend an all wood clarinet.
  • Mouthpiece: Vandoren 5RV Lyre, Vandoren M30, Vandoren M13 Lyre or  Pyne Polycrystal.
    Please make sure to get one of these specific mouthpieces with your instrument, as the “factory” mouthpieces can be difficult for a beginner to play on.  Please also purchase a mouthpiece cap.
  • Supplies
    • A box of 10 Rico Royal reeds (Reed Strength: 6th grade – 2 1/2; 7th & 8th grade – 3).  Reeds will wear out and need to be replaced periodically. As the clarinetist develops they will also need a harder strength reed.
    • A cotton or silk pull-through swab (not felt).
    • Other cleaning supplies – mouthpiece brush, polishing cloth & cork grease.
    • A 4 reed capacity “Reed Guard”.

Alto Saxophone

  • Recommended models – Yanagisawa T-901: (~$2,800); Student model recommended brands: Yamaha, Selmer
  • Mouthpiece – Selmer C-star or Vandoren Optimum Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece, AL3.
    Please make sure to get one of these specific mouthpieces with your instrument, as the “factory” mouthpieces can be difficult for a beginner to play on.  Please also purchase a mouthpiece cap.
  • Supplies

  • Mouthpiece – Selmer C-star or Vandoren V5 Classic Series Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece, T25 Please get one of these specific mouthpieces for your instrument, as other mouthpieces can be difficult for a beginner to play on. Please also purchase a mouthpiece cap.
  • Supplies

  • Supplies – Valve oil (Blue juice or Al Cass), mouthpiece brush, snake brush, tuning slide grease, polishing cloth.

Horn

Students may rent school-owned instruments or purchase one of the following recommendations:

  • Recommended brands: Holton H378 Intermediate French Horn, Yamaha 567 Intermediate French Horn
  • Mouthpiece – Holton Farkas medium cup.
  • Supplies – rotary oil, mouthpiece brush, snake brush, tuning slide grease, polishing cloth.

Trombone

Students rent school-owned instruments.

  • Mouthpiece –Denis Wick SM5, Schilke 46D or Bach  61/2 AL
  • Supplies – Valve oil (Blue juice), mouthpiece brush, snake brush, tuning slide grease, polishing cloth, small bath towel.

Tuba

Students rent school-owned instruments.

  • Mouthpiece – Denis Wick 3L, Schilke 66, Yamaha 66, Conn 7B Helleberg
  • Supplies – Valve oil (Blue juice or Al Cass), mouthpiece brush, snake brush, tuning slide grease, polishing cloth.
